Creating Jobs and Safer Homes for Haitians

We want to help provide more jobs and homes in Haiti by demonstrating a method of building a low cost and upgradable “disaster safer” home with locally available materials.

  We realize that many new homes are needed in Haiti. We want to help build one home.

And, we are hoping to also teach business skills as applied to the construction of homes. 

Our building concept is easy and simple. Steel rebar protrudes upward to secure interwoven arches of rebar forming a dome shape. Overlapping sheets of metal lath, attached to the rebar dome, are hand trowelled with stucco cement after doors, windows, and vents are installed between the rebar arches.  

There are many reasons for building a sturdy and functional home this way.

The dome shape is more earthquake and hurricane safe than other building shapes.

Less concrete is used to make the foundation, floor, and dome enclosure.

No temporary or throw-away concrete forms are necessary.

Spaces between the foundation blocks allow for movement during an earthquake.

The dome roof shape contains enough open space inside to build a sleeping loft.

Putting round buildings on rectangular lots or adjacent rectangular buildings creates

useable spaces between the buildings without creating "alley like" spaces.

This type of building can be built above existing rubble with a “mesa base”.

The “mesa base” reduces erosion and can be stepped to accomodate sloping ground. 

We are hoping that after we have helped some “students” in Haiti to build one home,

the “students” would then create a construction business helping to build more homes. 

Knowing what we know about building low cost dome homes and creating sustainable businesses, we feel it would be irresponsible of us not to try to help the Haitians

to create jobs and to build earthquake and hurricane safer dome homes.
